San Gimignano, Palazzo Comunale, Pinacoteca6th September 2014 - 6th January 2015
This 6th September, an exhibition of the Umbrian artist Bernardino di Betto, nicknamed Pintoricchio, will be open to the public in San Gimignano’s Pinacoteca civica (Public Gallery), promoted by the Comune, by the Soprintendenza per i Beni Storici, Artistici ed Etnoantropologici per le Province di Siena e Grosseto in collaboration with the Arcidiocesi di Siena, Colle di Val d’Elsa e Montalcino, the Fondazione Musei senesi and Siena Capitale Europea della Cultura 2019 (Siena European Capital of Culture 2019) – candidate city.
The painting that depicts to the sides of the Madonna in glory the saints Gregory the Great and Benedict, was painted between October 1510 and February 1512 for the Olivetani monastery of Santa Maria Assunta in Barbiano, a few kilometres from San Gimignano and represents the last documented work by the artist who died on 11th December 1513 in Siena, where he is buried, in the San Vincenzo church in Camollia. The last season of the artist’s work is documented in the exhibition as well as other works provided by the National Gallery of Siena, which are Madonna with Child and Saint John the Baptist, the Sacred Family and John the Baptist and The Nativity, the latter attributed to his workshop. Also on display will be Madonna with Child and Saint John the Baptist, issued by the Diocesan Museum of the City of Castello, to represent the Umbrian surroundings in which Pintoricchio was formed before going to Rome, and where he had continued to work before being called to Siena.ENTRANCE FEES:A single ticket valid two days, to gain access to all museums
